bad fashion and weird garbage

i posted a while back that the stores here are full of leg warmers (and yes, i have seen people wear them but haven’t been able to get a pix). the other day i saw this one. cracked me up. its like RELAX aussie style.

while i’m at the pix… what in the WORLD is multi coloured thing sitting out waiting for the trash collector??? another pix here. is it me or does it seem like someone threw someone else’s possessions out the door & they just got swept to the curb??

today’s cultural lesson – the feijoa

last year a friend asked if i had ever tried a feijoa. i had not tried it nor heard of it so i sipped her feijoa cocktail (which happened to be made with feijoa vodka not the fresh fruit but anyway…) and enjoyed it. of course it’s hard not to enjoy vodka. turns out it’s a south american & new zealand grown fruit. related to a guava, it can be used as an exfoliant and it’s high in vit c.

when we were in nz earlier this year, i tried it as much as i could. feijoa smoothies. juice. chocolate. vodka. but i still never actually saw one or had a fresh one til today. over the wknd i went into a little market & saw them. here’s the photographic evidence & your cultural lesson of the day the feijoa.

but suicide food did lead me to – vegan ice cream. yum.

lights out

a couple saturdays ago, sydney did something they called ‘earth hour‘ where they urged residents & businesses to turn off their lights for an hour (saturday 730pm to be exact). i was up that wknd for the v fest and didn’t notice any kind of difference – but then we couldn’t see all the big buildings from where we were. we could see some apartment buildings that definitely didn’t participate. supposedly more than 2 mil people turned off their lights (there’s 4 mil in sydney) providing a 10% drop in energy in the cbd.

it was all over the news up there but just looked totally daggy. like a few places (opera house) turned off lights but the city didn’t seem much different when they kept showing it on the news (yet talking about how dark it was!). i found it pretty amusing. thankfully, there’s now a 5 min video capturing all the excitement! fyi, you have to forward thru to about 1/2 way to see the lights going off.

if anything, it illustrates how much could be saved if companies turned off their building lights, including marketing signs & mcdonald’s arches…

twitter & puppets

it’s melbourne comedy festival time and the other nite we went to puppet up. as in henson/muppets/kermit puppets. seems it’s been on TBS at home but this is the first time it’s been here. i highly recommend it. the clips illustrate how you can see both the puppets & performers but it’s not the same as being there & watching both at the same time. i might even try to see it again while they’re here.

while it’s not the muppets or kermit there are some characters which remind u of them. and they’re SOOOO in the same style when you look at the motions. tip: try to sit in the front row b/c they had 2 people come up. one even got to put their hand inside a puppet!!!

there’s a new twitter map out twitter earth. btw, i had to change my username on twitter b/c it was over 15 characters. apparently u can create a username over that limitation (as i did) but then you can’t do things like add a pix or update your settings. sigh. so i’ve changed mine. i think it updated things automatically on the twitter site but i need to update my widget b/c it’s not pointing at the right page. if you’re doing the feed i think you’ll have to update & point here
