australia is obsessed with water. sure it’s an island but it’s a very dry island. the country is having a huge drought, has water restrictions in syd, melb and elsewhere, talks endlessly of how to save water and there’s talk of recycling waste water to become drinking water (already is in some places).
while in new zealand i was SHOCKED by the stupid usage of water. sprinklers turned on in the height of the afternoon sun! in wellington i walked past a bldg doing some construction and they had a hose lying in the street with water pouring out. here you can get a fine for watering your front yard.
yes, i’ve been brainwashed by the au obsession.
so to illustrate a sad point (of being brainwashed, how different of a mindset this is and how indulgent a pool is)… a friend of mine at home has just gotten a in ground pool. they have just filled it. it took 53k litres.
we received our water bill today. according to the chart, over the last quarter we used 179 litres each day. 179 a day over 365 days is a little over 65k.
the amount of water needed to fill a pool which will be used mainly by 2 people is almost as much as much water as we use every YEAR in our 2 person household. that statistic amazes me.
