November 27, 2006 on 11:43 pm | In london, melbourne, nyc | No Comments

i have always said that london never felt as multicultural as nyc and now i have proof! ;)

city of sound reports on an article about cosmopolitan cities that was originally in the economist (the article is actually about canadian multiculturalism).

according to the data they use, nyc has 9.31% of its population foreign born. london is 7.17% and melbourne is 3.37%. interesting sydney isnt even in the list. so there we go. i was right. ;)

mark dec 22 in ur calendar (and watch a movie – oh, that’s just wrong…. read & understand )

because it’s global orgasm day.

not a bad idea but why now you ask. why have a day at all? so according to their site:

The mission of the Global Orgasm is to effect change in the energy field of the Earth through input of the largest possible surge of human energy. Now that there are two more US fleets heading for the Persian Gulf with anti- submarine equipment that can only be for use against Iran, the time to change Earth’s energy is NOW! Read more about the fleet buildup here.

The intent is that the participants concentrate any thoughts during and after orgasm on peace. The combination of high- energy orgasmic energy combined with mindful intention may have a much greater effect than previous mass meditations and prayers.

to change the globe’s energy field. how great!

speaking of energy – the boy & i went to see a movie yesterday: who killed the electric car?. it’s actually more tv documentary than a movie but it was showing at the theatre here (more details on the film). it’s about the electic cars that were introduced in the late ’90s, why so few existed and why they disappeard so quickly. interesting but there was no hard hitting, or even deep digging journalism in the film. some interesting interviews & sound bites but i felt it didn’t go deep at all. was disappointing in that way. if it’s on tv or you can rent it and you’re interested in cars or the politics or the environment, i recommend it.

i have to say absolute FAV quote in the film came right at the end when they were interviewing some guy. i cant’ remember who he was or what the exact quote was but it was something to the effect of (and he was saying this very seriously):

every time the government tells us we need to be economical with our energy, to us it means things like drive a small cramped car or turn our heat down & be cold all the time & end up living like europeans.

i thought it was v funny (as did boy) but i dont think the other 3 people in the theatre laughed.

ny times on sydney

November 14, 2006 on 9:56 pm | In melbourne | 2 Comments

the ny times features sydney in the latest ‘36 hours in…sydney’. first off – if you fly the whole way over here & only spend 36 hours, you’re insane.

but the beginning of the article made me wanna puke. it starts out:

A boarding pass to Sydney should come with a warning label: Beware, this city will have you questioning the quality of life in your hometown. Sydney has managed to skim the best parts of other cities and swirl them into a perfect blend of urban bliss. At any given time, visitors can enjoy the sun-soaked laid-back vibe of Los Angeles, the cleanliness and efficiency of Geneva, the energizing hustle and bustle of New York City and the Old World charms of London. Pair all of that with a unique brand of casual Aussie warmth and you’ve got more than enough to justify the otherwise prohibitively long flight to get there.

now i’ll agree with the laid back vibe of LA (and all that other la baggage) but i don’t get the rest of it. there’s nothing old world about sydney (comparing it to london is hilarious. maybe old world in the way san fran is old world…), the hustle & bustle i’ve seen is around lunch hour in the cbd (and that’s about it) and while it’s def cleaner than some other cities i’m not sure … ok, maybe i’ll concede on that point.

kim, you’re the new sydney resident… care to comment? :)
