outlook/palm suggestions?
August 27, 2006 on 12:55 pm | In tech | No Commentswondering if any of u reading have a solution for me….
i’ve started a new job & am using outlook (of course). i want to copy/export my work outlook calendar to my palm (or at the very least to a web based calendar). note i do NOT want to sync! i prefer not to put my personal calendar on outlook – i just want to have access to my meeting schedule when i’m not in the office.
the closest i found was yahoo’s calendar sync software – intellisync – which looks like i could put the work calendar onto the web but not on my palm b/c my palm o/s is too old (so i guess using the newton is out of the question…).
btw, i know i could save my outlook calendar as csv or other format & then import the file but i’d prefer something that wasn’t quite so manual as i’d probably be doing this several times a week.

a completely silly post
August 26, 2006 on 4:25 pm | In random | No Commentsi was in priceline about an hour ago buying contact solution (fyi, priceline is a drug store here, not the travel website). as i walked to the cash register, i had to walk thru the makeup area & a display area caught my eye. bonnie bell. um, isn’t that the cool lip gloss company that i used to buy lip gloss from when i was like 14?
and sure enough, they have raspberry and strawberry. lip smackers they’re called. how freaking cool. for $3.25 i now have raspberry flavoured & scented slightly pink tinted slightly glossy lips and i feel silly & happy. it’s a good afternoon.

August 22, 2006 on 9:58 pm | In melbourne | No Commentssad sad sad. several months ago i posted about the first krispie kreme opening in melbourne although it turns out it was waaaay out in the burbs. now the news one will be opening on collins st. it’s on the west side, near spencer st station (um, sorry, southern cross station) but in the cbd. the location is not that far from where i’m working so good thing i don’t really like them.

melbourne intl film fest
August 11, 2006 on 4:30 pm | In melbourne | No Commentsmelbourne has an international film festival (going on now). i don’t go to many movies but there was a stack i would have liked to check out. i’ve managed to get to 2.
new orleans music in exile and an inconvenient truth
the new orleans movie left me dissatisfied, sad and wanting to go dancing. the blurb made it seem it would be a mix of music and interviews with artists. that it was. it mainly highlighted something like 7 artists including cowboy mouth, irma thomas, the iguanas and cyril neville. there were also interviews with the head of wwoz, music journalists, tipitina’s owners and club owners from austin & memphis who are reaping the benefits of misplaced musicians.
but the movie left me dissatisfied because it skimmed so many issues. the wwoz guy mentions how the music is so passed on from generation to generation and that is in danger with people spread around (plus the schools being closed or the music programs being closed, etc). there’s brief mentions of organisations like music cares who are helping but there wasn’t any depth in that story line. there’s lots of mentions of the destruction& news footage. some of the artists even give you a tour of what used to be their homes. but there’s no talk of what it’s taking to rebuild. no digging into the issues that musicians would have specific to them (health, money or otherwise). also the movie was just focused on new orleans, none of the local parishes where the zydeco/cajun stuff would have come out more. i have a long list of things the movie didn’t address that i wish it would have.
i walked out having a lot of questions, feeling sad about what was going on, sad about the future of new orleans & its music history and massively homesick for an evening of zydeco music.
(need to run… will have to come back to comment but…) gore’s movie was amazing in terms of the presentation he does. the message wasn’t anything i hadn’t heard before really. he did have some different data and he presented it in amazing ways. the one data/visual that really caught my attention was when he showed florida, netherlands, china, california & india maps and then showed (using colour) how much of the land mass would be under water in x amt of years if the water temperature keeps rising. um…. u floridians….. (and u know who i’m talking to!!!) might want to start thinking about your next relocation.
flying becomes fun again
August 11, 2006 on 11:27 am | In london, melbourne, nyc | No Commentsobviously i’m glad whatever was planned has (hopefully) been stopped but i’m also glad i don’t have any flights home planned for the near future.
here in AU they have said any passengers going to the states or to the UK can not take any liquids on-board (which would annoy me as i always have eye drops b/c of the air on planes). they also can’t take computers or mobile phones or mp3 players. geez, a long haul flight w/o my computer or mp3 player would suck majorly (not to mention putting it in cargo and not knowing if it’s going to be there after the flight). apparently, for the first time here they’re making people headed to the usa take off their shoes.
i saw a list of items you can take on-board british airways but you can’t take a bag to carry them in. yep… NO carry on luggage, not even a purse. so if you can juggle your wallet, keys, contact case (but no liquid), tampons (individually, not boxed), passport, glasses (but no cases) w/o having them in a bag… congrats!
for domestic au flights they say they haven’t changed any of the security systems. although i wonder if they’ll actually start checking IDs. yes, you heard that right. in 2006, i have flown 3 domestic trips(well… 6 indiv flights). and only ONCE did they check my ID. no, i’m not kidding. i’d use the kiosk to check myself in and drop my bags off. no checking ID. u don’t need to be flying to go thru security so they didn’t check it there. nor did they check it when i actually boarded the plane. btw, i didn’t use the kiosk every time (cause sometimes it wasn’t working properly) and in that case(s) i went to the counter with my print out itinerary that i already had in my hand & they never asked for ID.
seems like a basic measure you’d take. sad as when i flew from melbourne to LA about 3 weeks after 9/11, they had very impressive security. not intrusive but professional and through.

August 11, 2006 on 2:30 am | In nyc | No Commentsthe spiegltent is down by the seaport during aug & september! i know i’ve mentioned the tent before as it comes to melb every year.
it’s a traveling tent and you should go check it out. it’s beautiful inside. just go for one of the club nites if you’re not interested in any of the gigs. it’s not the most fab thing you’ve ever experienced but it is pretty cool. i think this is the first time it’s been in nyc.

multiple clocks on your computer
August 7, 2006 on 6:33 pm | In tech | No Commentsif for any reason you communicate with people in other time zones, i recommend using this nice little multiple clock program for windows, zone tick. i have used them for several years & am v happy with the product (i have nyc, london & melb as my clocks).
recently they sent out a promo where paid folks can offer their friends a fully functional version that runs til october 1st. if you’re interested in trying it, download it (though i think they said the promo only runs til the 9th of aug or something.
